about

"One of our particular (birth) trainings was sitting in a room with 20 women of color. And as we tell our birth stories, only two people had a beautiful experience, only two people had an experience that put a smile on their face. Everybody else had trauma. And it just showed me the importance of us needing to, number one, support each other because we share the same stories without even knowing it and (number two), we need to heal ... Because the things that are happening to us are not fair and we just internalize it and it makes us think negatively about birth."

Latoya Castro, also known as Mama Castro, is a birth worker in Burlington, North Carolina. She owns Earthside Harmony, is a member of the Tree of Life Birth Collective, and works with the non-profit MAAME (Mobilizing African American Mothers Through Empowerment).
