about

"My grandmother was I guess what we would call a birth worker. She definitely did not have any kind of title. (She and) her sisters started their own business, basically being what we would call doulas and postpartum doulas. So that was all word of mouth. And she did that for almost 30 years, just going around helping women birth their babies, and she would get calls from all over the place ... (And) I guess I just kind of always saw her in action, whether it would be with our my cousins, or myself, or just within our family ... You learn just through her example."

Latoya Castro, also known as Mama Castro, is a birth worker in Burlington, North Carolina. She owns Earthside Harmony, is a member of the Tree of Life Birth Collective, and works with the non-profit MAAME (Mobilizing African American Mothers Through Empowerment).
