about

“Listening makes us. In a culture that doesn’t know how to listen, I will say that probably 80% of the work that I do as a doula is just listening to people... I can’t fix someone’s anxiety, but I can hear it, and I can reflect it, and I can normalize it, and I can offer resources. I can hold space for it, and I think we forget how powerful that is. Sometimes that, in itself, is all that’s needed.”

Chama Woydak is a birth doula, childbirth educator, and university instructor in Asheville, North Carolina. She operates the Homegrown Families Health and Education Center and serves as a strategic advisor for community-based doula programs.
